One of the best gifts parents can give their young child(ren) is a sensory table. Children learn and retain knowledge best when their senses are engaged; a sensory table offers so many opportunities for learning. You will be amazed at how centered and calm your child becomes when offered a table filled with – you name it – sand, water, cornstarch, snow (real or artificial), dirt, goop/gak, gelatin, shaving cream, bubbles, flour – the list...

What do you love to do with your children? How old are they? And what is your greatest wish for them? I love going on bike rides with my boys. Though both young, the oldest is four and the youngest is just 8 months, and unable to actually ride bikes themselves, we all pile in the Dutch Box bike and head for the beach – no matter the season. I love that my kids are learning...

Betsy had been awake for a while when she heard “Whaaah!” coming from Charlie’s room. She threw on her pink terry cloth robe and went to the six-month old she took care of.  “There you are! Hi Charlie. How’s my adorable boy?” She picked Charlie up and held him tightly. Charlie snuggled into her robe.  “Let’s get you some breakfast.” Betsy warmed a bottle of Charlie’s mother, Lucy’s milk. Charlie was smiling and gurgling as he looked...

If you don’t know this place, located on Hamilton Ave in Chickahominy, you should. The food is really good. On the left side of the building, Mike and Frank Greco create unique and delicious pizzas. Our latest favorite is the pulled chicken pizza - the barbecue taste has just the right amount of smokiness - but all the different varieties are amazing. The buffalo chicken pizza is awesome too! On the right side, the brothers and...

Parents are getting used to being told not to overschedule their children. Yet the enrichment classes, the sports clinics, the many after school activities offered continue to be full. Why? Some parents want to give their child an “edge,” whether it is a leg up in a sport, an ability to play brilliant chess, or to learn a new language. Others fear that their child will be bored if left with open time, and “get into...

Most parents are aware of the importance of building confidence and self-esteem in their children. How to do it effectively? One way is to listen when they talk and then respond, to let them know you take their ideas seriously. Ask their opinions at times. Spend uninterrupted time with them to show you enjoy their company. Building self-esteem often involves a lot of “Good jobs.” We praise children for just about anything they do, from drawing...

What do you love to do with your children? How old are they? And what is your greatest wish for them? I have 2 girls, ages 15 and 25.  Time spent with each of them is very different based on their age and personality differences. With my 15 year old, it’s all about her friends right now, but when we do hang out shopping or whatever, we have great conversations.  She’s quite open with me and I...

[caption id="attachment_5713" align="aligncenter" width="310"] Dr. Paul Lowe – Admissions Guru[/caption] It's early decision time and anxiety is beginning to fill the air. For some, within the next two months or so it will be a time to celebrate – accepted! And for others, it will be discouraging and disappointing - deferred or worse, a rejection letter. This is expected to be another highly competitive year. The number of applicants is increasing, while the admissions rates to the...

What do you love to do with your children? How old are they? And what is your greatest wish for them? I have three children ages 12, 10 and 4.  I love preparing a meal with my children – especially when we go all out and cook a feast and bake lots of desserts.  The meal always feels much more special when everyone has participated.  I also enjoy a family dance party!  My greatest wish is that...

Last Spring, parents and children at Putnam Indian Field School (PIFS) planted nine organic gardens on the school grounds to encourage and celebrate healthy eating.  The gardens were part of the school’s move to organic, non-GMO, more fruit and vegetable filled lunches. In between the many vegetables, the children planted marigolds (to discourage bunnies), herbs and nasturtiums.  [caption id="attachment_5146" align="aligncenter" width="608"] Marcella Kapsaroff, PIFS mom and Garden Committee Chair shows children the fruits of their gardens.[/caption] Tomatoes of all...

Becky was happy that her new classroom was sunny and the staff was so friendly.  She did have butterflies and yet she knew once her job actually began, she’d feel calmer.  On the Sunday night before the first day of school, her clothes were already out for the next day and she had packed her lunch.  She decided to go back over her class list to become familiar with the names of the children and...

Why Steve Jobs Didn’t Let His Kids Use iPads (And Why You Shouldn’t Either) via nextshark.com If you fall within the Gen-Y era like us, chances are you’ve given a bunch of thought as to how you would raise your own children in this day and age (assuming you don’t have children already). Especially with technology, so much has changed since our childhoods in the 90s. Here’s one question: Would you introduce the technological wonder/heroin that...

What do you love to do with your children? How old are they? And what is your greatest wish for them? When we are feeling mellow I love reading with my girls and snuggling with them. We are a pretty touchy-feely bunch!  I also adore skiing with them and playing golf with them.  We are an active family so some of our favorite moments together are a simple hike near our home in VT, a dip...

Right after Labor Day, the teachers went in to school to prepare their classrooms. Becky was new to the faculty, having just moved to town from Maine. When it was time for lunch, she felt awkward joining the groups of obvious friends who gathered in several rooms for lunch. Leaving the pretty old building for a nearby park, she found a bench in the sun and opened her small brown paper bag. She was ravenous...

What do you love to do with your children? How old are they? And what is your greatest wish for them?  My 3 cuties are 6 and 6 (twins) and 4.  There is nothing I love more than our nightly routine of snuggling up on the couch.  Each kid gets to pick books and sit on my lap when we read them.  We snack on cut fruit and veggies and laugh and chat about our day,...

[caption id="attachment_5714" align="aligncenter" width="310"] by Dr. Paul Lowe – Admissions Guru[/caption] The real question is not whether you should hire a private college admissions advisor, but whether you want your child to have a competitive advantage in a very competitive and selective process and as a concerned parent, are you willing to pay for that advantage? It’s that simple! First let’s discuss the ways in which expert admissions advisors can help you. We bring:  Experience, knowledge and insight...

Jane and Lizzy had been close friends in high school and, as both recently moved back to their hometown, their friendship felt current and even stronger.  Both were married with young children and they often shared parenting notes with each other. On one bright morning, they met at the local beach.  They settled into their beach chairs, sipping iced coffee as they looked at the beautiful still water of the Sound.  They were happyto be together. “So...

[caption id="attachment_5715" align="aligncenter" width="310"] by Dr. Paul Lowe – Admissions Guru[/caption] Over the last 17 years as a college admissions advisor, I have observed that many well-intentioned parents don’t have the time, knowledge and emotional tolerance to “play” college admissions advisor, even after they create spreadsheets, read books, take copious notes during college tours, talk with friends, and try to gather information from my workshops. U.S. parents are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of having a...
