Laura Danforth, Head of School, Masters School and Dr. Paul R. Lowe
In October, Dr. Paul Lowe and his admissions team visited The Masters School in Dobbs Ferry.
The goal of our school visit and assessment – Private School Assessment & ReviewSM is to provide parents with the knowledge they need to decide where their children should go to school, and to help them find out what steps are needed in the admissions process. By placing current information they need right at their fingertips, parents and students can feel confident that they are making the best school choice which will be an excellent fit for their individual, social and educational goals.
The Masters School is a college preparatory, independent boarding and day school for grades 5-12 located in Westchester County, New York, twenty miles north of New York City. Students come from 15 states and 31 countries. The student body includes 36% students of color. Masters recently opened its Fonseca Center, a 75,000 square-foot athletic and arts center which includes a fencing space, six-lane competition swimming pool, four squash courts, fitness center, elevated running track and a gymnasium with a regulation basketball court, two practice courts, two volleyball courts, an art gallery, two dance studios, music rehearsal and performance space, a black box theater, and a digital media lab. College acceptances in 2015 to Ivy League schools: Brown, Cornell, Dartmouth and Yale.
Assessment: I found The Masters School’s atmosphere safe, welcoming and warm. There is a feeling of an embracing community spirit without a sense of insularity. This is likely accomplished by the faculty, administration and trustees’ unified commitment to represent a variety of races, cultures and differences at all levels of the organizational hierarchy. While touring this updated state-of-the-art campus, we observed that students were intellectually confident, happy and polite. Even the cafeteria and maintenance personnel were polite and happy. I sat in on an Economics class that had 9 students around a Harkness table. There were 5 countries represented at the table. Now that’s an engaging, collaborative and diverse learning environment. I’ll give Masters School two thumbs up and 4 out of 5 stars! – Dr. Paul R. Lowe
