April 5, 2017 11:55 am Bro of the Month – Hernan Hurtado of Mt. Kisco Smokehouse
Hernan Hurtado, Jr. is co-owner of Mt. Kisco Smokehouse in Greenwich. His business is an offshoot of the original Mt. Kisco Smokehouse in (guess where?) Mt. Kisco, which was started in 2000 by his father, Hernan, Sr. and two uncles. Now that the business has expanded to Greenwich, Hernan, Jr. and his cousin William, Jr. run the new store which has received rave reviews from Greenwichites, some of whom have declared their hand-sliced Scottish smoked salmon “better than Zabars.”
Tell us about Mt. Kisco Smokehouse. What made you expand to Greenwich? What is your favorite product?
Mt. Kisco Smokehouse is a family business, started by my dad and my uncles. They have over 30 years experience smoking seafood. Many of my customers say it’s the best they have ever had and love to compare us to places in the New York City. 2 years ago when I was deciding where to put my store I came to Greenwich and loved the look and feel of Downtown Greenwich, I knew instantly that I had found what I had been looking for. Being located between lower Westchester and Stamford has proven to be convenient for our customers in neighboring areas. My favorite product is the hand sliced scotch salmon, I love the smokey flavor it has. Put it on a toasted bagel with some scallion cream cheese, a couple slices of tomato, capers, and I’m one happy camper.
What qualities do you admire in a father?
I admire a dad that can bring out is inner child and play with his kid like they’re both 5 years old. That’s what my son enjoys the most and is most memorable to him. Sometimes we get out of hand and it drives my wife crazy (lol).
What do you love to do with your son?
I love doing anything that’s outdoors with my son, from going on a walk around town to going on bike rides on the bike trail, hiking at Bear Mountain, playing soccer, or just racing each other to see who is faster. If we’re outside we’re having a great time.
What sports and/or outdoor activities do you enjoy?
I’m a huge soccer fan, especially of Real Madrid, and I enjoy playing very much. Once upon a time I was good (lol) but now I just play for fun when I get the chance. I like to think I still got it (lol).
What kind of music do you like to listen to?
I like all types of music but my favorite has to be salsa. Where my parents immigrated from in Colombia is considered the world capital of salsa. So listening and dancing to salsa is how I was raised. Sometimes I have it playing in the background while I’m working.
Where would you like to go on vacation?
I enjoy watching Chef’s Table and my dream vacation would be traveling the world with my wife trying out all of these amazing restaurants.
Where is your favorite place to Party with Moms and what is your drink of choice?
I would have say at family reunions with my mom, aunts, cousins, grandma, and my wife, who are all the most important moms in my life.
