October 8, 2013 4:04 pm Meet Nancy McCarthy! This Week’s Mom of the Week!
What do you love to do with your children? How old are they? And what is your greatest wish for them?
I have 2 children. My son Colin is 4 and my daughter Maeve is 2. I live for family time on the weekends and we love to bring Colin & Maeve places. I love to see their eyes light up when they experience something that brings them so much joy, like seeing Elmo at Sesame Place, or going apple picking. On a day to day, we love to play, act silly, sing karaoke after dinner, play outside, and snuggle. I wish for my children to be healthy and happy. My husband on the other hand wants Colin to play for Chelsea Football Club, and Maeve to be a fashion designer. Lol.
When and where are you the happiest?
I could be anywhere as long as I am with my family. If I had to choose something, I love the weekend mornings when no one is in a rush, we are all home, and grandpa and sometimes my sisters and their children come over for breakfast. It is lovely family time and the kids all play together.
If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?
I would love to do a Mediterranean cruise, tour all over Europe. I have been to Italy but would love to go back. My husband and I honeymooned in Hawaii. We said we would go back in 5 years. Well that was this past July and we never went, so hopefully sometime we can go back.
What quality do you most admire in a mother? And what woman has had the biggest impression on you?
I admire a mother who can do it all: work and be successful, keep the household together, keep up with doctor appointments, play and spend quality time with the kids, read/work with the kids, exercise, spend quality time with the hubby… there is so much to do in a day. I lost my mother at 21 and she taught me many life lessons in that short time. I’ll never forget her saying wise things like, “I may not always like you but I always love you”… or your discipline with children should be “firm but fair.” I find that I think of her and her wise ways often with my own children. I admire my two wonderful older sisters as well, who have 3 children each. They share important parenting tips and with me, guidance from their experiences, and are so helpful to me.
What is your favorite movie?
I love to laugh, especially being so busy, it is nice to relax and have a good laugh. I love silly movies like Meet The Parents, Dodgeball, and Bridesmaids.
What personal achievement are you most proud of?
I began teaching in the Bronx at 21. I taught kindergarten for 9 years and was promoted to Literacy Coach for PreK-2nd grades. In August I bought the childcare my children were attending as the owner was selling it. I am now a business owner and the PreK teacher there. It has been hard work but beyond wonderful. We have full enrollment and a waiting list. I am doing what I love and get to be with my children everyday now, which I enjoy more than words can say. They tell me that I am the best teacher ever, and hearing that makes everything worth it…
What do you feel is your strongest talent?
I feel that I am a hard worker, loyal, and dedicated. I love my friends and family and would do anything for them. When I am passionate about something, I follow through with it, such as buying the business. I am also passionate about my community. I love where I live and am dedicated to keeping it the amazing community it is. For example, the town recently closed our local elementary school because it was deemed unsafe. I am active in the community in ensuring the school is repaired and reopened. This school is the heart of our town and community.
What do you like to do for fun?
I love to go out to dinner and drinks with my friends and/or my husband. I love to go to comedy clubs, because I love to laugh :).
What is your favorite time of the day and why?
I love the morning when I snuggle with the kids, but I love dinnertime as well, chatting about our days, and playing around after we eat.
Where is your favorite place to Party with Moms and what do you like to drink?
Any place with good company, and a glass of cabernet is where I always love to be.
